Sisters. Smoke. Synonimous. Three words that go well together.
We use smoke, just not as much and only one smoke machine. Usually located by the keyboardist (when we've got one) or Jonathan-K The Shiney Thing.
IMO, the lights wouldn't work without the smoke. The smoke wouldn't be enhanced by the lights. Neither would work without The Sisters.
The only other band I've seen that uses high levels of smoke effectively are FOTN. |

You have wisdom beyond your ears, young sir.
I felt the same when I finally got to see the Sisters in October 1984. So much so that I lost interest completely within a month and didn't venture out again until 21 years later. To quote from Some Girls ...
"...a throbbing sound into a shimmering, pulsating machine of sorts. Some nights you could even hear songs. ... We used a lot of smoke, very few lights, stepped right back and just made a space where you could lose yourself ... in a tide of colour and noise."
Just don't forget to whirl like a dervish. You'll find yourself in the best of company. _________________ And you know that she's half crazy but that's why you want to be there. |

Ahhhhh, and there it is. That's *exactly* it. If I were a religious person, I'd say that Tuesday night was akin to a religious experience. But I'm not religious. _________________ Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. Well, not spelling though, that's "paid".
Anyway.
Who's FOTN?
Synonymous.
The 'locks had more smoke than the Sisters in DC. My friend joked that we hadn't actually "seen" the Warlocks, just heard them. I pointed to the little guitarist guy on the left (who was outside the smokescreen) and said "Well, we've seen A Warlock..." _________________ Flowers on the Razor Wire. |

Dude, English isn't her first language, so you might want to cut her some slack (and this comes from a self-proclaimed spelling/grammar nazi, too).
"FOTN" = Fields of the Neph(f)ilim.
I got to meet 2 Warlocks, and actually saw all of them on stage at one point. So nyah! _________________ Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. You are already naked. There is no reason not to follow your heart.

Fields of the Nephilim. Don't ask me. I've just been here too long. Apparently they took the Spaghetti Sisters kitsch to a level Mr McDougal could only dream of. Cryptic enough for you? _________________ And you know that she's half crazy but that's why you want to be there. |

Sorry.
Her English was good enough I thought it was a first language, so I didn't cut her the slack suggested. We could sometimes see the bassist too. Took us a while to even see two drum sets, let alone drummers. Does anyone know if the Warlocks were using the Sisters light tech? He did a decent job hitting the cymbals with the spots and so on, though they didn't really DO the lights thing the way the Sisters do. _________________ Flowers on the Razor Wire. |

Easy to say: you could almost kiss the guy!
Let me put it straight, for the record: at first I was disturbed not beeing able to see a damn thing, especially because I had just bought a brand new digital camera-photo for the event! But almost 20 minutes after the beginning of the show and while some people were complaining around me, I decided to accept that smoke thing as a true artistic choice from Eldritch. "When You Don't See Me" was playing and it appeared clearly to me why it's so hard to find pictures of Eldritch on the Net, why Sister's official site is so dull, why the ad for the show was all dark and unclear. "It's so Sisters" I said to myself (in french).
I wanted to know in this forum if all that smoke was really Sister's will or if the smoke machine had run out of control in Montreal. It seems not. More than that: true fans have loved or would have loved the gig.
And one last thing: for me neither English isn't my first language…

hehe - forgiven -
english is my third language actually
in the montreal gig ; i can totally agree that during the warlocks part it was "smoke machine abuse" - otherwise ; for having myself used a small smoke machine while being staff to the high school fashion shows - i can say it's load of fun when i ordered to "let it smoke!!" and it has this sort of sweet smell to it - enjoyable - no ? _________________

I've had about 6 years of French (high school/college), and I can't think in French, even now. How I envy you!
And yet your English is better than most Americans'. Astounding (and very depressing, if you think about it). \m/ _________________ Remembering that you are going to die is the best way I know to avoid the trap of thinking you have something to lose. i can't believe i just read 4 pages of this ....
slightly disturbed to discover that there are -to be added to the missed-the-point pro-drummer brigade- six HLers who (at the time of writing) voted against the smoke. _________________ "a right hand is a horrible thing to lose...." |

While I view the bassist question as open (I think the Sisters currently would benefit at least a bit from live bass, but that the Doktor's bass could also be improved by a bit more attention to samples, at which point it would probably be a wash), the drummer question is not.
The Sisters of Mercy with a live drummer would be like the Rolling Stones with a taped Keef. Or Miles Davis using a drum machine. It completely misses the point of the act. There are things that live drummers do well; sounding loose and rollicking, like Charlie Watt. Sounding pounding and majestic, like Keith Moon. However.
For sounding like a relentless dead-on juggernaut, nothing beats the good Doktor.
And that last is what a Sisters live show is supposed to be. A jackhammer designed to get inside your head and (hopefully) lay eggs there. _________________ Flowers on the Razor Wire. |
