Re: "Two Worlds Apart" -Billie Hughes ("Under The Gun" Original Version)

Wow, me neither. It's pretty much this song, isn't it, plus AE's 'rap'?

Re: It was thirty years ago today...

I'm a Floodland chap all the way. Maybe just because it's the first thing I heard (to be more specific, I remember hearing the baseline of Lucretia at the age of 13 and thinking...Oh.My.God. Maybe I don't need to be listening to Erasure any more). But to me, that's the one all the way. I think it's ...

Re: Eldritch and Morrissey?

I've read Not Wanted on the Voyage. It's described as a dark and twisted version of the Noah's ark story. It's pretty good.https://www.amazon.co.uk/Not-Wanted-Voyage-Timothy-Findley/dp/014007306X/ref=sr_1_3?crid=7RUM0NLJBVF6&dchild=1&keywords=not+wanted+on+voyage&qid=1599563800&sprefix=not+wanted+on...

Re: Book: Waiting For Another War

Jeez Louise, you're not wrong. I guess since P&P is the same for either 1 or 2 copies, the clever thing to do would be to order one for your friend at the same time, and charge them the £5 or so it would cost to repost within the UK. $24 is eye-watering.

Bit of trivia: William Harvey is the man who discovered the circulation of the blood. I've always thought that was appropriate for Von, though I can't quite put my finger on why.

I don't think AE has any inclination to release records - a mixture of being a stubborn git, the diminishing incentives, plus possibly being a bit more fragile than he likes to project. What I suspect happens every now and then is that the young whippersnappers come along, write some nice tunes, get...

Intriguing. Six Ways to Sunday could definitely be about domestic violence. But it could also be about police brutality / the sharp end of the state. I think my hunch that Caligula's Eyes is about Thatcher is confirmed. 'There is no us' probably reflects her famous 'there's no such thing as society....

That is pretty cool. Certainly looks like Von's handwriting. I'd guess it was something he wrote to send to a music journalist.

One of the things that gives me most hope about the new songs is that - judging from all the youtube vids I've been watching - I think AE really likes the new songs. Is proud of them, even.

And he's with people who obviously enjoy playing them - and that seems to be rubbing off on him too?

Oh, I remembered something I meant to say - 'the eyes of Caligula' is a reference to Margaret Thatcher. Francois Mitterrand famously said she had the eyes of Caligula, and the lips of Marilyn Monroe.

Personally, I think he needed glasses.

I'm sufficiently intrigued by all of this new song speculation that I'm posting this - my first message for, what, 14 years?!? He's not releasing records because...he doesn't want to. The opportunities are there, and if he's placing unrealistic demands on record companies that he knows they'll refuse it's because...he doesn't want to release any records. It seems he was ready to release a record what, fifteen years ago? But...

I think you mean, it's never been clear IF Von reads Hegel, not how...He's never given any indication that I can think of of having read Foucault or Derrida or Lacan or any other supposedly post-structural theorist you could shake a stick at, either. Why begin a post by saying that the distinction between modernism and postmodernism has always seemed barren to you, and then end it by asking 'the Sisters: modern or postmodern'?

Or am I just being shamelessly foundationalist?

I should add, for those non-Brits, that '[Skin and] Blister' is cockney-rhyming slang for sister. Hence the name. They weren't cockneys, though. A cockney Sisters tribute band would be too, too much.

Now I might be able to help here... I studied at Durham Uni in the early 90s, and there was a not-very-famous Sisters tribute in the area called The Blisters of Mercy. I met one of the band members once back then, who was quite a nice chap, even though he was of the mistaken opinion that The Sisters...
