So, thanks to Mark we've got this far (and mentioned Heartland).

Thanks Mark. That wouldn't be Лидз, a little-known suburb of Chelyabinsk, would it?

Russians - could you assist a journalist?

Hi guys, It's been a long time since I've posted on here, but a few of you may remember me from way back. Anyway, these days I'm working as a journalist for The Moscow News (www.mn.ru), an English language paper in Russia. I've been asked to do a story about this http://www.lifenews.ru/news/25415 (l...

I wouldn't say Finland is Scandinavia... Where would you say it is, then?  It's a Nordic country, but not part of the Scandinavian peninsular, as I understand it. That extended land border with Russia attaches firmly to the northern european landmass. If Finland was Scandinavian logicall...

The Sisters of Moscow?

Stumbled out of the Metro the other day to be confronted with a truly shocking poster. Summary here: http://www.b1club.ru/ No idea what this place is like since it isn't open yet. It could be related to the existing B2 club in Moscow. But any venue which books TSOM and tATu in it's opening week has ...

HI everyone. I'm just about settled into Moscow now, been here for a couple of weeks. For those in the city, I'm living at Novogireevo, out on the end of the yellow metro line. Teaching is a bit too much like hard work - I should have stayed in journalism and wasted merrily for hours on end. But I'm...

Don't believe it. First UK tour in ages, two months after I leave the UK.

I guess they're not going to be playing anywhere in Russia? I could come to other parts of Eastern Europe if provoked.

Say Hello, wave goodbye

Haven't been on here for ages due to various bits of life stress. Probably won't be back in a hurry either due to more big changes on the way. But for those who remember me from the distant past, and care, I'm being made redundant from my job, pocketing a moderately sized cheque and buggering off to...

Found this explanation on-line. Productivity levels hit a record high in several offices today due to a mysterious computer bug. The sharp surge in efficiency was put down to the collapse of the pernicious "Heartland", a virtual location famed for its destructive impact on professional and social li...

Fair enough, but you (and the other people who answered) have avoided facing the dilemma which is the crux of the theoretical question, which is: what to do when the human rights of two individuals clash. I support all the human rights - the right to freedom of expression (i.e. free speech) and the...

Thanks guys. Just back from a weekend in Krakow. It was cold (about -20 of cold) but otherwise pretty. Off to hear Luke Haines at the Islington Academy tomorrow night, and have a rather alarming sounding date at a stand-up comedy gig on Saturday. So my passage into official old-git-dom is to be mark...

Fair question, Laz. As for the Hitler question, no I wouldn't. Making the Nazi's a covert organisation would have had little impact on their appeal, which was built around dismantling the 'establishment' which had precipitated the desperate state of 1930s Germany. If the fascists hadn't won popular ...

I think it's called freedom of speech. Unless you'd rather fight fascism with fascism, of course.

Interestingly the NUJ is withdrawing its support for existing copyright legislation. There was a long (and rather dull) piece about this in their latest issue where they argue that they were wrong to endorse the repressive capitalist mechanism of copyright (the NUJ does write like this all the time ...

London - Edinburgh is one of the fastest (and thus most expensive) routes in the country. It's much less than 12 hours one way. I'd guess about five would do it, which still makes a day return slightly pointless. But it's like booking flights: if you sacrifice a bit of flexibility and buy in advance...

I did read their explanation (albeit after posting). But there's plenty of things which could count as a 'monument' (this is, for me at least, distinct from a building). For the works of music and literature I've mentioned, where the original manuscripts are still extant (I don't know, to be honest)...

Yes, but ..... Having shopped for CDs in Russia, it's amazing how easy it is to get good quality bootlegs (CD or MP3) of pretty much any artist you're interested in. A regular visitor to the former USSR could easily do all of his record buying without any of the artists seeing a kopeck of his money....

Hmm. Not sure what I'd have as my seven wonders. But why are they all buildings or structures? Have we achieved nothing in any other field? How about Bach's 48 Preludes and Fugues (also known as the Well-tempered Clavier)? Truly sublime music, and extending the boundaries of the art at the same time...

What else can you do? Our legal system relies on evidence; and as you point out, hearsay and circumstantial evidence tend not to count. You need to provide clear evidential links between our putative bombers and the actual bombs, or the legal system can't touch them (assuming the arrests can be mad...

If our suicide bombers - who, let's face it, aren't planning a luxury cruise to recover from this gig - do realise they are being tailed, what's to stop them detonating the bombs earlier? OK, it might not bring the underground to a halt (though it probably would given the anxiety around this issue a...

OK, lets add some plausible reality to the cynicism. Of course this is a little too slick to be truly real, but bear with me. I especially want the answers from those whose gut response was that torture is wrong, and the use of evidence extracted under torture is also wrong. Imagine it's July 6, and...

This year could be a vintage tat harvest for me: since I really can't think of anything that I want (not which could be viably purchased, wrapped and put under a tree, anyway) it all hinges on whether the family cheque will be larger or smaller than the (frankly unnecessary) amount I've already spen...
