Londoners say Yes to BORIS!

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

That's right. Take a look at the new Mayor of one of the world's most powerful cities. Boris yetserday ousted Ken and swept to victory in London - I found out from an Evening Standard seller at Bond Street, and made no secret of my amusement.

Hilarity has given way to an increasing sense of alarm, however. I've made much of my Boris-worship on HL, with avatars and such like... but I have to say it never occurred to me that the man could end up wielding any actual power. He provides us with so many extraordinary gaffes that I wouldn't mind him in isolation, but the fact is he's affilifated to a party that appear to be using him as their ticket out of the political wilderness, and a resurgent Tory party is emphatically NOT something I want to see. Especially under the leadership - lest we forget - of dough-faced chancer David Cameron.

So what do you think? Are we all doomed? Or is this the dawning of a glorious New Age for the capital, where all are free to slag off Scousers with impunity? :innocent:

Call me politically naïve, but what power does a mayor actually have?

Not working in a 'city' I can only comment on what I know about a Provost's duties: they mainly are a figure head, usually a long standing member who's nearing retirement, opening schools and handing over prizes for photo ops. takes up the bulk of their time. They do chair full Council sessions and have casting votes. I believe Lord Provosts are more politically active and are involved in economic development.

I think the Mayor of London is very different to an ordinary Mayoral role (in this country). Perhaps more akin to the Mayor of New York... Londoners seem to have embraced it as their version of devolution, where they don't have to worry about pesky Scots intruding all over the place

Briefly, yes. Arrived at 7am on a National Express and left at 10pm. Was going to stay the Friday night and go to Camden on the Saturday but I realised I'd forgotten to pack half the stuff I needed, and none of you soft southern jessies could make it out, it seems  :P. So I just headed home. Didn't get any sleep for 48 hours, so I only got up a couple of hours ago

Excellent Madame Claire :D

As a Londoner I get the impression that people were voting against Ken rather than for Boris.
Ken was good in his first term but became arrogant in his second and we didn't like that so the best way to get him out was voting for the person with the best chance of beating him, i.e. Boris.

N.B. I didn't vote for Boris!

Today Boris, tomorrow Alex?
We live in a time when Monty Python sketches appear scaringly realistic.
Okay, here in Germany the Bavarian politicians have taken care of that genre for decades, so I guess London will survive.

Well seeing as i eat LAMB on a regular basis the price of Lamb will simply go down so i can eat more of it.

I don't think you understand the basic rules of economics, Monsieur le Goth. Less sheep means higher prices.

Not sure about the goats though...
