I know this is a very old question and it was covered in a previous, extensive thread (unfortunately I can't find it, the search function has been useless for me lately).

Anyway...
First And Last And Always was released for the first time on CD in 1988 - right?
I seem to remember reading in the other thread that about 1/3 of the tracks on the CD are from the 1985 "original" mixes but the majority are "Japanese mixes".

Why are they referred to as this? I always assumed the story was that an alternate "remixed" version of the original LP was released (in Japan). Is that true?

Inexplicably enough, some folks actually seem to prefer them to the proper mixes. Maybe this FAQ should be about why on earth...
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.
