Riff Stealing

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Gimme Shelter it's very near to temple when you hear, but isn't when you play ;)

@Re-inventions: Arms and Still are pretty originals.
(apart from Killing Joke Songs)
Like I said, it's the same chord scheme (e-d-a if I recall correctly). And when you play GM, it's really easy to see how A.E. came up with the riff for TOL.

As a guitar player: it's a LOT easier to play GM
Temple it's E-D-A, gimme shelter it's more like...

G|-----4-4---4---------2-2---2-------2-----2-----2---2-----2-------
D|---6---------6-----4---------4-----------------------2-----2-----
A|-4-------------4-2-------------2-0---0-0---0-0---------0-----0-2-

Close, but not the same scheme :D

BTW, indeed, GM it's pretty easier than GM
Nope, the chords are E-D-A in both songs.. (sorry :-))

Then there are some Sisters songs tabbed out on the Songsterr site. I can't tell how accurate they are, but maybe it's of use to get a general idea. http://www.songsterr.com/a/wsa/sisters- ... tabs-a5087

Not surprising for the Dandy Warhols to pay some tribute: http://www.dandywarhols.com/news/tour-pics-sisters/ ;)
If I told them once, I told them a hundred times to put 'Spinal Tap' first and 'Puppet Show' last.

I've never noticed L.A. Rain's similarity to a particular Sisters track - their whole sound was clearly heavily influenced by the Girls, but it definitely has that Reptile House feel to it. Your post made me dig out some old RoA CDs and another of my old faves, Velveteen, sound very like the much later Sweet Child o' Mine about a minute or so in : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=QEN3yBWq ... re=related. Imagine what a small share of the royalties of that song would be worth to phil and the lads ...

L.A. Rain did have a similar bass riff to Emma, but that wasn't a TSOM song in the first place.

I see the Velveteen link though :)

Still not as cheeky as the B*****s though.
They practically copied Oasis* note for note

I hope :von: got substantial royalties for that, seeing as the game only came out in 1988. "Barry Leitch"'s Wikipedia page mentions that he has worked with "goth legends Alien Sex Fiend", so any suspicion that the nearly anagramous Leitch and Eldritch might be the same person can be immediately discounted !

I guess Von was listening to a lot of Skynyrd when writing VT. It's not riff stealing as such (neither are most of the examples posted under the admittedly provocative thread title...) but compare this LS track to Something Fast: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dH-gnMSzmtI

Has this one been mentioned yet?

(The song title is a red herring, listen to the riff.)
