The Great Heartland Biscuit Thread™

Does exactly what it says on the tin. Some of the nonsense contained herein may be very loosely related to The Sisters of Mercy, but I wouldn't bet your PayPal account on it. In keeping with the internet's general theme nothing written here should be taken as Gospel: over three quarters of it is utter gibberish, and most of the forum's denizens haven't spoken to another human being face-to-face for decades. Don't worry your pretty little heads about it. Above all else, remember this: You don't have to stay forever. I will understand.

That's blocked here apparently by C4. Is it from Black Books ? I seem to remember something involving a coaster..

Yes that was the one with the coaster :D

Although Dylan Moran has spoken again else where about Catholics, Protestants and Biscuits... Hope this one is not blocked :notworthy:

A court ruled that the product should be considered a cake, meaning that VAT isn't paid on the product in the UK.
That means that there is different VAT for cakes and biscuits in the UK? :D

Sort of.
If I understand right, there is no VAT on plain biscuits. But if they have a chocolate coating on them, they are considered a luxury & are subject to VAT.
Not so with cakes.
Cheers.

Summarized is,
- Biscuits with Chocolate cover = VAT for luxurious products
- Cakes with Chocolate cover = no VAT considered as basic need

I believe the MP's vote for this law were Biscuits haters ;D

It's quite controversial really. Teacakes were another one that got re-classified as biscuits & the taxman collected millions in revenue before a court re-classified them as cakes again & ordered the taxman to pay back the revenue (or some of it anyway).
Seems the baked goods business is a legal minefield

Might just have to make a batch of bootleg chocolate biccies this afternoon... and then rigorously taste test at least half of them.

STOP PRESS: In a triumph for the Common Man against the numberless nameless faceless forces of corporate fascism, my local supermarket has inaugurated a "British Foods" section, wherein one can procure (among other things) Bounty bars (both plain and milk varieties), Mars Bars, proper baked beans, Ribena (assuming you can get a second mortgage), and joy of joys, Chocolate Digestives! Oh Happy Day! I spent the weekend in an orgy of Earl Grey tea (from a tea-pot, no less!) and dunking my way to Type II diabetes.

The huge Tesco in the next town does that here. I am almost at peak Mini-Cheddar
But I have been able to score Rich Tea biccies too & commit high heresy dunking them in coffee just to be contrary :)
Cheers.

Well, some of you may be pleased to learn that finally there has been some resolution to the Niece/Nice debate.

It would appear said biscuits have actually been renamed !
