Riff Stealing

THE place for your Sisters-related comments, questions and snippets of Sisters information. For those who do not know, The Sisters of Mercy are a rock'n'roll band. And a pop band. And an industrial groove machine. Or so they say. They make records. Lots of records, apparently. But not in your galaxy. They play concerts. Lots of concerts, actually. But you still cannot see them. So what's it all about, Alfie? This is one of the few tightly-moderated forums on Heartland, so please keep on-topic. All off-topic posts will either be moved or deleted. Chairman Bux is the editor and the editor's decision is final. Danke.

Nice ones! The riff in Maiden's "Fear of the Dark" is also reminiscent of Temple (and incidentally the song came out right after the new TOL).

Great find. There are so many links between the bands sonically and lyrically, apart from the obvious John Ashton link. For example, when I first heard YCBTO the first thing I thought of was I Wanna Sleep With You from Talk Talk Talk.

Was just listening to some old Belgian coldwave from the mid 1980s (like you do) and this riff from the criminally forgotten The Neon Judgement's Euro Indie Club dance floor smash of 1986 reminded me more than a bit of the third single from Floodland a year later.

I had a listen to that last song (The Neon Judgement - Awful day), and it was ... okay (interesting at least... until the ending). I noticed there was a (Spanish) comment that mentions the Sisters and stuck it in google translate... it mashed out as follows:

"This group is d s**t, in the wake of the Sisters of Mercy but adding a unique personal touch; q yes it was music; space reserved for art creation and paranoia; d away so boring and conformist modern times; However while this music is not better go to the dark, amoral and competitive situation; rub your dystopia"

I guess in an ideal world there should be a prize for a more accurate translation...

The Specimen riff sounds a lot like Pssyche, in turn.

The vocals, too! You totes can sing "hot metal and methedrine" together with the melody.

I really liked this.

That's the beauty of music - it's all down to opinion. Ironically, when I bought Awful Day back in 86, I thought it was a rip-off of Train...

This has been annoying me immensely. The bassline from the wailing ginger foghorn is far too seriously similar enough by half to NTTC for my liking.

Those ones^ are really similar, you can even sing NTTC over the top and it fits until you get to the chorus then it changes.

I highly doubt Florence listens to the Sisters though.

Good spot @nork1. Perhaps Wayne can sue and get enough out of this to retire - what you'd call a win-win.

At around 40 florence is certainly old enough to remember the sisters. quite comical that she pretends she's 28.

unbelievable that the foghorn is headlining glasto
