Dear Doktor

A friend of mine was wondering whether it might be worth venturing into darkest Europe this summer. He's never done it before and is worried that his tent-pole may not pass muster and that even if it does all that squelching around could leave an unsightly stain on his hitherto unblemished groundsheet. Please advise.

Well, he shall enter at his own peril, and keep in mind that he'll never be the same again afterwards. But there are certain experiences in life one shouldn't avoid and since the Europeans have descended the trees a while ago (well, some of them), he might have a lot of fun in their territory.

Tent poles can be replaced and stains removed.
